Blagdon Minipond and Midipond Gravity Filters

Blagdon have a terriffic range of gravity filters suitable for domestic ponds. The gravity filters sit up above the water level of your pond. Your pond pump then pumps the water from the pond up into the gravity filter. They are a terrific alternative to a pressure filter as they can hold large amounts of waste and are much easier to clean out. The Blagdon Minipond and Midipond have included a suitably sized Ultra Violet Clarifier which helps to control algae. Each filter also has 3 different grades of foam filter pads which help to remove dirt and waste. Ceramic biological filter media help to prevent the build up of harmful toxins in your pond water.

  • Integrated Ultra Violet Clarifier to kill green algae that is suspended in the water and keep it looking crystal clear
  • 3 different grades of foam filter pads to remove sediment (mechanical filtration)
  • Wool pad for finer filtration
  • Carbon pad to reduce toxicity and remove chemical pollutants
  • Bionoodles which create an ideal place for nitrifying bacteria to live, which breaks down ammonia and other toxic substances to help with the nitrogen cycle of your pond (biological filtration)
  • Large hinged lid, unpressurised so you can simply lift it up and take out the filter sponges to clean
  • Replacement UV Lamps, Filter Sponges, Wool/Carbon Pads as well as other spare parts readily available
  • Replacement bio-noodles also available
  • Large filter housing holds a lot of waste before needing to be cleaned
  • Ideal for dirty fish such as Koi or heavier fish stocking since they are much easier to empty out the waste
  • Simple Blagdon Pond Kits are available including pump, matching filter, hose and fittings - click here

Aussie's Observations about Minipond and Midipond Gravity Filters

Budget • Good • Better • Best • Superior

Any pond where you can place the filter box above the water level. The best kind of filter for Koi.

Construction is superb as is the filter layout and number, quality from top to bottom. Very good value. This is a great large capacity gravity filter.

If pumping up to a waterfall it can be difficult to position a gravity filter above it, best to use a pressure filter in this instance.

Filter selection

To choose the ideal filter for any pond you must first know the correct flow through the filter to maintain ideal water quality for your pond. (Please remember that the pond size alone does not determine the filter or pump size without first taking into account the many environmental and physical factors)

3 ways to get help to establish flow

  1. Fill in one of our e-mail help forms and let us do all the calculations for you
  2. Give us a call 1800 607 388 for expert advice
  3. Do it yourself and use our quick reference flow calculator for rough estimate
  • Step one: Establish the required flow through the filter keeping in mind waterfall** height if any, or long hose**
  • Step Two: Choose a filter from the chart below (Example if your pond requires a flow through the filter of 2,400 litres per hour, the Minipond 6000 would give the best result)
  • Step Three: Choose a pump, they are listed below in order of quality and suitability

Aussie's additional thoughts
Tip 1: When calculating flow,  always allow about a 15% flow loss
Tip 2:Place the pump at the opposite end of the pond to the water return, and in the deepest part of the pond
Tip 3: Interpet offer a chemical to prime filter systems, a great way to hasten biological activity Interpet Bio start
Tip 4: If in doubt always choose a pump with less than the maximum recommended flow  Within reason the slower the water passes over the UV lamp and through the filter the better the result. However, you can never have too much pond flow, so, by having a slightly oversize pump and releasing water directly back into the pond or on to a feature or waterfall through a "Tee" with a flow valve, added circulation is provided for the pond.
